Indications
For the treatment of urinary tract infections when caused by susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, Enterococcus, Staphylococcus aureus and certain susceptible strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter species
How to use
Adults 50-100 mg four times a day - lower dose level recommended for uncomplicated urinary tract infections
Pediatric patients 5-7 mg/kg body weight per 24 hours, given in four divided doses (contraindicated under one month of age). Treatment should be continued for 1 week or for at least 3 days after urine sterility is obtained.
Persistence of infection indicates the need for reassessment
Contraindications
Anuria, oliguria, polyneuropathy, allergic reactions to nitrofurantoin.
High levels of urea in the blood.
Caution is indicated in any impairment of excretion and during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Newborns and infants.
