What is cefadroxil and what is it used for:
Cefadroxil is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is indicated for the treatment of the following infections caused by susceptible micro-organisms: When treated by mouth:
Pharyngitis and streptococcal tonsillitis
Bronchial pneumonia and bacterial pneumonia
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections: pyelonephritis and cystitis
Skin and soft tissue infections: abscesses, furunculosis, impetigo, erysipelas, pyoderma, lymphadenitis
Do not use cefadroxil:
If you are allergic to the active substances or any of the other ingredients of this medicine, or to any other cephalosporin or penicillin medicine
Cautions and precautions:
Dosage should be adjusted according to the degree of renal impairment
The occurrence of diarrhea may impair the resorption of other medicines and thus impair their effectiveness.
Superinfections with fungi (eg Candida) can occur with prolonged treatment with cefadroxil.
The Coombs test result may be transiently positive during or after treatment with cefadroxil
Urine glucose should be determined by enzyme (eg using test strips) during treatment with cefadroxil since reduction tests can give falsely high values.
Cefadroxil contains sodium
Frequent checks of coagulation parameters are necessary during long-term concomitant use of anticoagulants or platelet aggregation inhibitors to avoid hemorrhagic complications.
How to use cefadroxil:
Cefadroxil is taken orally
Adults:
The normal adult dose is 1000 mg twice daily.
Dosage adjustment is required in renal impairment
children:
The usual recommended daily dose for children less than 40 kg is 30-50 mg/kg/day in two divided doses daily.
